Guide | 2015-2020
“Guide” uses the film “Guide” (1979, Tianshan Film Studio) as material, combining its two language versions (Uighur and Chinese) and re-editing it so that all the characters speak in their native language.
The Uighur version of the original film has all the characters speaking fluently in Uighur. Similarly, the Chinese version has all the characters speaking fluent Chinese. Many episodes in the film involve language misunderstanding and acts of language translation, such as the Uyghur people not understanding Mandarin and the Chinese not understanding Uyghur, and the British not understanding Uyghur. However, in both the Uighur and Chinese versions, all the characters use the same dubbing language but play out the language barrier.
The artist re-edited the film so that each character is dubbed in that character's native language without any translated subtitles. The changes make the performances 'real' and drags the plot into reality. The result is that the audience cannot properly watch the film and be stuck in difficult of understanding, thus perhaps corresponding to a reality that is truly difficult to understand.
